The Kiger Mustang emerged on the scene in the late 1970's as a phenomenon among mustang populations. Spanish characteristics, plus a heavy dose of dun factor, gained these horses nationwide attention. As a result, the Kiger has stepped beyond mustang status to become a popular domestic breed.

The majority of Kigers available to the public today have been made available due to the efforts of private breeders. The domestic Kiger is bred for conformation, disposition, and color. Not only are the Kigers durable mounts, but they are also affectionate and trustworthy companions. The average height is 14.2 hands, and they have a mule-shaped hoof that seldom requires shoes.

Ninety percent of these horses possess dun factor. Other colors include bay, black, roan, gray, and buckskin.

Kigers are not timed-event horses, but they are agile and suitable for general purpose ranch work. Kigers have also been used for driving, packing, endurance and trail.

Within the last two decades the Kiger breed has secured its future in the horse world, and more and more people are discovering the satisfaction of owning a Kiger.
He's not just an animated character.

He's REAL.

A Steens Mountain Kiger, purchased by Dreamworks SKG, was selected to use as the model stallion for the animated film, Spirit, Stallion of the Cimarron. Spirit was originally known as Donner, and is a son of the foundation stallion, Steens Kiger.
